You guys voted and here are the results of our 2013 K-pop Shwasty Awards! Thanks for voting and stay tuned for our WTF K-pop Awards coming soon!
BEST INTERACTION WITH WESTERN STARS: GD x MISSY ELLIOTT (35%)
Was any collaboration this year more sincere? This was a meeting between two giant geniuses and they led our poll the entire way through.
Top Contenders: Jackie Chan x K-pop (28%), Tiffany x Tyler the Creator (20%)
WORST INTERACTION WITH WESTERN STARS: T-ARA N4 x CHRIS BROWN (45%)
This interaction was one of the strangest this year. It was so unnecessary – and you guys agreed. Here’s to hoping Chris Brown sticks to ruining his image State side, and keep himself from further tarnishing images of an already self-ruined girl group in the East.
Top Contenders: Justin Bieber x YG Entertainment (38%)
WORST DEBUT: WA$$UP’s “Wassup” (46%)
WA$$UP took this poll cleanly. Perhaps with a solid concept, these girls could make a splash. But twerking? That’s so VMAs.
Top Contenders: CL’s “Baddest Female” (21%)
MOST BORING COMEBACK: 2PM (37%)
2PM’s comeback was anti-climactic indeed. After more than a year of waiting, fans were treated to the sleep-inducing “Come Back When You Hear This Song.” We’ve talked about it in the past, and our readers agreed – this was the year’s most boring comeback.
Top Contenders: f(x) (23%), Miss A (18%)
MOST EPIC COMEBACK: BLOCK B (47%)
They weren’t supposed to come back. They were supposed to fade into obscurity after a lawsuit that should have disbanded them. So whether you’re a Block B fan or not, this was unequivocally the most epic – and unexpected – comeback of 2013.
Top Contenders: EXO (26%), Seungri (16%)
BEST POTENTIAL FANFIC MATERIAL: EXO’S POCKY GAME (37%)
EXO beat out Lee Joon’s X-rated love scenes and Seungri’s 19+ rated teasers. Maybe the pocky game inspired some of your imaginations to run rampant.
Top Contenders: Let’s Talk About Love teasers (23%) Lee Joon’s adult flick (20%)
MOST HEATED FANWAR: BELIEBERS vs. EXOTICS (48%)
Exotics, Beliebers, and SONEs had a big year in 2013. Not just in music, but also in the fighting ring. You guys chose Beliebers vs. Exotics as the most heated fanwar and for good reason. The EMAs prompted an all-out social media war, just to be bitterly quelled when neither of their biases won the EMA award.
Top Contenders: Beliebers vs. SONES (36%), EXOTICS vs. RINGA LINGA (16%)
IDOL WE WANT TO SEE GO SOLO IN 2014: MINZY (28%)
Luna and Hyoyeon led this poll for a good chunk of the vote, but got overtaken by fans who want to see Minzy do her thing. And why shouldn’t she? She’s been cast in the shadow of her three sisters when it’s clear she has a wealth of talent waiting to be tapped into.
Top Contenders: Bang Yongguk (20%), Hyoyeon (15%)
WORST COLLABORATION: T-ARA N4 x CHRIS BROWN (60%)
This collaboration won with overwhelming results. And more hilariously, this song never even released fully. Which makes it all the worse.
Top Contenders: 2NE1 x will.i.am (23%)
BIGGEST TROLL: YG (62%)
Failure to keep to schedule. Failure to debut groups. Failure to hold an actual world tour. No one surpassed YG in the trolling department in 2013. And we’re not sure anyone ever will.
Top Contenders: None
PERSON YOU WANTED TO PUNCH MOST IN THE FACE: JUSTIN BIEBER (41%)
How does someone who’s not involved in K-pop win our K-pop poll? By being Justin Bieber, that’s how. JB’s douchebaggery transcended genres. He went to Korea to hang out with the YG Fam, got in a skirmish at a club, kissed a few girls, and enraged angry YG stans. Until next time, Biebs. Until next time.
Top Contenders: AKP’s Johnny Noh (39%)
GROUPS THAT NEED A REVAMP ASAP: ALL OF JYP (64%)
It’s tough being a JYP artist. Either you’re shipped off to Japan with no way out, shipped off to the U.S. with no way out, or shipped off to JYP’s newly constructed dungeon. With no way out. JYP artists need a serious revamp come 2014. JYP won this category by far.
Top Contenders: CL (16%), uBeat (13%)
MOST DISAPPOINTING DRAMA: NAIL SHOP PARIS (31%)
This year, the bad dramas were bad. Despite Gu Family Book’s stiff Suzy acting, and Monstar’s trying to recreate the magical trend brought on by Dream High, you guys voted Nail Shop Paris as the most disappointing drama of 2013.
Top Contenders: Monstar (21%), Iris 2 (16%), Gu Family Book (15%)
GROUP THAT NEEDED THE BIGGEST HUG IN 2013: BLOCK B (33%)
Block B probably had one of the best years of their career to date. But they probably also needed the biggest hug. Bigger than the JYP crew. Bigger than Daesung. Because for a while there, it didn’t look like they’d ever come back. They needed a bear hug. And you know what? Their fans probably needed one too.
Top Contenders: All of JYP (31%), Daesung (29%)
SCANDAL THAT MADE US BREAK OUT THE MOST POPCORN: AILEE VS. ALLKPOP (68%)
Ailee vs. AKP won overwhelmingly. It was the scintillating scandal that made us question journalism, made us reconsider how we judged idols as netizens, and overall rocked K-pop. And to be honest, everyone came out better because of it. Well, maybe not AKP, but you get it.
Top Contenders: None
BEST WTF MUSIC VIDEO: COUP D’ETAT (35%)
MFBTY led this poll in the beginning but lost ground halfway through. You may have been confused – but that was the beauty of Coup d’Etat. You know you’re doing something right when half of your fans hate it. Because the other half loves it.
Top Contenders: What’s Happening (20%), Sweet Dream (18%), What’s Your Name (17%)
WORST SONG OF THE YEAR: WOLF (24%)
How strange is it that one of the biggest songs of the year, one of the highest performing songs that came from a group that had one of the biggest years in K-pop – had the worst song of 2013? Either that says something about the strange tastes of fans, or the strange state of K-pop.
Top Contenders: Baddest Female (19%), I Got A Boy (16%), Everybody (10%)
WHO HAD THE WORST 2013?: ALLKPOP (28%)
Allkpop won this poll by 3 votes (JYP Entertainment came second). It’s understandable – AKP had a faulty website redesign, lost traffic, and of course had that huge Ailee scandal. This year, AKP got knocked down a peg or three. That lost momentum could see its way into 2014.
Top Contenders: All of JYP (26%), U-Kiss (16%), DMTN’s Daniel (13%)
WHO HAD THE BEST 2013?: BLOCK B (26%)
You’d think G-Dragon would win this category. He’s had his second studio album release, a monster collaboration with Missy Elliott, and featured in a ton of American magazines and newspapers. But nothing beats an underdog story of kids who clawed their way to a marvelous comeback. If “Very Good” is a precursor of what’s to come, then 2014 is bound to be a very, very good year as well.
Top Contenders: G-Dragon (22%), Crayon Pop (17%)
TREND WE WANT TO SEE DIE IN 2014: TAEYANG’S CONFUSED HAIRSTYLES (39%)
We’ve all had hair issues with Taeyang for years. But 2013 was the year that broke the camel’s back. Let’s not even recount the hair faux pa’s he’s had. Hopefully in 2014 he’ll go back to good ol’ reliable – the mohawk?
Top Contenders: Twerking (26%), Sexy everything (14%)
THING THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2014: JYJ PROMOTES FREELY (26%)
To be quite honest, this probably should have happened in 2013. And 2012. And 2011. You get it. It’s about time fans are able to see JYJ on variety shows, on music shows, and basically living out their dreams that they worked so hard for.
Top Contenders: YG’s Team B debuts (25%), Running Man returns to its glory days (21%)
And there you have it! Any you disagree with? Wish we would have put on our list? Let us know below. And look out for our WTF K-pop Awards coming soon!
